After 50 years in academic life and consultancy, Professor Roy McLarty PhD, MBA, MA, DMS stepped into retirement in December 2021. His illustrious career included directorship roles in various companies and partnerships in others.
Initially starting in agriculture, Roy transitioned into retailing before becoming a lecturer at The University of Strathclyde. He later served as a Visiting Fellow and Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia. Roy also held the position of Head of Economic Development for the County of Essex, and his career concluded as the Director of the MBA Programme at the University of East Anglia. During his tenure, he introduced Entrepreneurship and International Management to the university syllabus.
Roy’s later affiliations included Boston University, Imperial College, and Prague Economics University, where he was an Associate Professor, over many years.
In September 1980, Mary and Roy McLarty relocated from Strathaven, Scotland, to Wymondham, Norfolk, where their children, Carol and John, continued their education. While Roy taught at the University of East Anglia, Mary managed their farm, Wicklewood Hall. Her role expanded when Roy became a Director at Essex County Council, where Mary played a role in initiating and launching the Essex Business Centre. She hosted various events for recruits and associates.
In the mid-1990s, Mary, along with Roy, established R M Services, a business providing management and IT training for redundant executives. Mary led a team of consultants across East Anglia, achieving notable success in raising computing skills and assisting managers into re-employment .
In September 1997, Mary and Roy returned to Norfolk. Mary embraced the role of Secretary at Norwich Central Baptist Church, overseeing significant amalgamations, renovations, and budget management. In 2013, the McLarty's moved to Newbury in the south of England. Mary became actively involved in managing their housing development, serving as the Secretary of the Residents Association and liaising with the landlord, Standard Life. She managed this role diligently through the tenure of five managers, addressing the concerns of nearly 200 leaseholders.
